Alabama Crash Investigation

Here is a noteworthy crash for you. I usually don't spend much time reading these reports, but Aero-News.Net brought this one to my attention. It is based on NTSB Preliminary Report ERA10FA099.
It seems that there was this Alabaman who took his first instructional flight on Oct. 30, 2009, completed his first solo flight on Dec. 20, bought a plane on Dec. 23, then took off at night and flew it into "rising terrain" under low clouds on Dec. 24. He had 25 hours total time, no cross-country endorsement, no night solo time, yet was flying from Pell City to Atlanta "to see his girlfriend". The FAA, with their usual efficiency, registered N1277T on January 7, 2010, to John Gilbert, Jr., deceased.
